Designing a New London Stay, with Samuel Wright

Brick walls catch the light, the hum of the historic Liverpool Street station, and Shoreditch’s creative energy meets the towering offices of The City. Sir Devonshire Square, which opened this past autumn, brings all this energy together in a curious design with little touches of British charm tucked into every corner.

The design was led by Samuel Wright, Founder and Creative Director of Maison 191, the Cornwall- and London-based studio known for their bespoke approach and Utopian vision. Sam brought this philosophy to life throughout the hotel. Read on for how he created spaces that feel thoughtful, unexpected, and distinctly Sir.

Hi Sam, let’s start with what Utopian design is, and what inspires you?

Utopian design is about imagining a better, more thoughtful world through architecture and interiors. It focuses on open spaces, geometric forms, and a strong sense of materiality. I often look at mid-century modernism, radical residential projects, and classic Utopian homes for inspiration, drawing ideas from how these spaces combine beauty, function, and a sense of calm curiosity.

How did you bring this feel into our spaces?

We focused on open spaces, bold shapes, and rich materials. The lobby and lounge have cozy window nooks, sculptural staircases, and modernist planters that bring nature inside. It’s about creating spaces that feel calm but alive.

How did the building’s history influence the design?

We stripped back walls to reveal the building’s original volumes and arched windows. Keeping the history visible lets the hotel feel rooted in its past while adding contemporary, thoughtful touches.

How did you reference Devonshire Square’s creative past?

The area was buzzing with experimental textiles in the ’70s. We found two patterns that really capture that energy and reworked them for the hotel, so they feel bold, fresh, and tied to the local story.

Are there surprises for guests?

Yes! Every corner has something to discover: hidden vanities, framed views, sculptural staircases, and window seats. The goal is to make every stay feel personal and full of small delights.
